PANEL UPGRADE

Reasons you may need a Panel Upgrade

 1. Increased electrical demand: If you've added new appliances, electrical devices, or home additions that require more power, your existing electrical panel may not be able to handle the increased demand.

2. Safety concerns: Older electrical panels, particularly those installed several decades ago, may not meet current safety standards. They might have outdated components, inadequate grounding, or faulty wiring that can pose fire hazards or increase the risk of electrical accidents. Upgrading to a modern panel with updated safety features can help protect your home and its occupants.

 3. Renovations or home improvements: If you're planning to undertake significant renovations or additions to your home, such as adding a new kitchen, expanding the living space, or installing a hot tub or sauna, you may need to upgrade your electrical panel to accommodate the increased electrical load. This ensures that your electrical system can safely and reliably power the new additions.

 4. Code compliance: Electrical codes and regulations are regularly updated to address safety concerns and technological advancements. If your current electrical panel doesn't meet the current electrical code requirements, you may need to upgrade it to ensure compliance. This is especially important if you plan to sell your home in the future, as potential buyers may request a code-compliant electrical system.

5. Home insurance requirements: Some insurance companies may require an electrical panel upgrade if your current panel is considered outdated or poses a higher risk. Upgrading to a newer panel that meets safety standards can help you maintain insurance coverage and potentially lower your premiums.

FPE Panels

Replacing a Federal Pacific Electrical (FPE) panel is often recommended due to safety concerns associated with these panels. Here are the main reasons why you should consider replacing an FPE electrical panel:

1. Safety hazards: FPE panels have a history of safety issues and are known for their failure to trip properly during overloads or short circuits. This means that in the event of an electrical fault, such as a circuit overload or a short circuit, the breakers in an FPE panel may not trip as expected, leading to potential electrical fires or other hazards. The failure rate of FPE breakers has raised significant concerns among electrical experts and regulatory authorities.

2. Panel design flaws: FPE panels were manufactured with design flaws and inconsistencies in their construction, such as substandard materials and poor manufacturing practices. These flaws can lead to electrical arcing, overheating, and other electrical malfunctions that pose a serious fire risk.

3. Legal and insurance issues: FPE panels have been the subject of numerous lawsuits and legal actions due to their safety concerns. Insurance companies may also view FPE panels as a higher risk, potentially leading to higher premiums or denial of coverage. Some insurance providers may require the removal or replacement of an FPE panel for the policy to remain in effect.

4. Difficulty obtaining replacement parts: FPE is no longer in business, which makes it difficult to obtain genuine replacement parts for these panels.

5. Peace of mind: Replacing an FPE panel with a modern, reliable electrical panel will provide you with peace of mind and ensure the safety of your home and its occupants.

What to expect: panel upgrade or electrical service upgrade

The process of upgrading an electrical panel typically involves several steps. Here's a general overview of the average process with CDB Electrical

1. Assess your electrical needs: The first step is to determine your current and future electrical requirements.

2. We will take into account the time, material, permits, any possible trenching, to create an estimate.

 3. Once you have approved our estimate and down payment has been received, we will then begin pulling permits (can take 2-6 weeks,) call BLUE STAKE where needed, and order material

4. Power shutdown and disconnection: Once permits are approved, we will coordinate a power shutdown with your utility company. This involves temporarily disconnecting the power supply to your home to ensure a safe working environment.

5. Remove the existing panel: The electrician will disconnect and remove the old electrical panel.

 6. Install the new panel: The new electrical panel will be installed in the same location as the old one. The electrician will connect the service wires to the new panel, ensuring proper grounding and secure connections. They will also install new circuit breakers and ensure that they are properly sized for each circuit.

  7. Wiring and labeling: The electrician will rewire the circuits, connecting them to the new panel. They will also carefully label each circuit breaker to indicate its corresponding circuit.

8. Perform necessary inspections: Once the installation is complete, the electrician will schedule any required inspections with the local building or electrical authority to ensure that the panel upgrade meets all safety and code requirements.

9. Power restoration: Once the necessary inspections are passed and approved, the electrician will coordinate with the utility company to restore the power supply to your home.

10. Cleanup and final checks: After power restoration, the electrician will perform final checks to ensure that everything is working as expected. They will clean up the work area and provide you with any necessary documentation, such as permits and inspection certificates.

**Power is typically restored the same day.

These steps can vary depending on the complexity of the project and the condition of the existing electrical.
